Fine Art Framing 101
Curious about framing your new artwork? After purchasing an original, contemporary work of art, getting it framed can often feel like the natural next step. We frequently get asked questions about framing paintings here at our Atlanta art gallery. Keep reading to see our responses to some of the common questions we get regarding fine art framing!
Does an artwork need to be framed?
Framing is completely based on personal preference! You never “have” to frame an artwork. We would say it is split 50/50 whether clients choose to frame their artworks or not. Still, there are definitely cases for both. Having trouble deciding? Here are our recommendations of when and when not to frame a painting.
REASONS TO FRAME A PAINTING
To show visual separation when a painting is hanging on a wall of a similar color. This is especially true for paintings with white backgrounds that are hanging on a white wall - the frame can really help create a visual and literal border that keeps the painting from blending into the wall.
To complement the finishings in a space. Fine art frames are a great way to tie a room together and establish a cohesive, refined feel throughout the interior design. For example, a sleek, modern frame can enhance a minimalist room, while a classic gold frame can further the character of a more traditional space.
To add extra protection in high traffic areas. Framing your artwork helps protect your artwork against accidental bumps, debris, and any bending or warping over time. For works on paper, glass frames can also offer protection from dust and UV.
REASONS TO NOT FRAME A PAINTING
If the painting continues around the sides of the canvas, a frame is unnecessary unless you specifically prefer one. The wraparound edges create a seamless look, allowing the art to be viewed from any angle. This type of design allows the painting to feel complete and uninterrupted.
The cost! Framing can be extremely expensive – often costing more than the artwork itself. We believe in accessible and affordable art collecting; that’s why we never pressure people into spending a ton of money on a frame. We want to ensure that you can enjoy original, contemporary art without breaking the bank.
If you are naturally indecisive. Framing art can often be an overwhelming process that involves making numerous decisions. For many, it’s easier to skip these decisions and enjoy the painting in its natural form. This allows you to focus on the artwork itself, rather than getting bogged down in details.
To frame or not to frame, that is the question.
At the end of the day, both framed and unframed artworks will look amazing. Overall the most important aspect to consider when framing is what you prefer!

Why are some paintings from gregg irby gallery sold framed?
Some of the artworks at Gregg Irby Gallery are already framed due to the artist’s preference for framed work. These works will have the frame type (ie. gold, natural wood, etc) listed in their artwork description. The frame is included in the price of the painting.
While not all available works have a frame around the border, all of the original artworks for sale at Gregg Irby Gallery come stretched, wired, and ready to hang.
