ABOUT ARTIST

Mary Beth Cornelius

“The ideas driving my art are the automatic and the subconscious. My background in engineering pulls me to explore line and shape, juxtaposing the geometric with the organic, the rigid with the fluid.

Aged surfaces are woven with fresh elements as I allow discovery of self. We are all multi-layered, and so my paintings reflect parts of us that are outrageous and exposed, and other times those that are intact and hidden.

The catalyst is often music, mood, and movement, but my emphasis is to create from an internal recklessness that abandons formal structure or accepted aesthetics. In my creative exploration, I choose to embrace what emerges and what evolves in the process. Each painting is a new experience; each painting has a life its own.”
